My living room is my favorite room in the entire house. Everything about it is cozy and I haven’t met anyone yet who disagrees. It’s warm, inviting, and comfortable. I’ve spent a lot of time getting this room right and there are still some things I hope to add to it as time goes on but I’m happy with it in the meantime.
Before we delve into it, take a minute to look at what the house looked like the day we bought it in my First Time Home Tour. Our living room was the definition of bland. We were quite literally given a blank canvas to work with and I have to say, it made my design choices easier. You can see right off the bat the gorgeous fireplace my husband fell in love with on our first walk through.
Living Room Ideas
I had never designed a room by myself before so I needed help. Check out My Living Room Inspiration to see the cornerstone pins that helped me design everything. I had mentioned, too, that there are still some things that I want to do. You can check out my Living Room Board on Pinterest to get an idea of what we will be adding next.
Creating an entry
The very first thing I had to address was the fact that the front door opens directly into the living room. I found this to be incredibly awkward but refused to let the front door define the space. We positioned the couch in a way that created an entry of sorts. Obviously it took away from the square footage of the room but I was ok with it.
After almost a year of the most bland and boring entrance in the world, I found this beautiful console table on Wayfair. It was a birthday present to myself! I found the lamp and mirror at Walmart as I was wandering around one day and they worked out really nicely.
The picture frame was given to us as a gift for my bridal shower and has one of our favorite sayings engraved on it, “Love you more than most”. I made the adorable little floral pumpkin for under $3! Check out how right here. The lantern was given to us as a housewarming gift and I love to decorate with it. I do so many different things with that lantern. I bought the bowl at a yard sale for $.25 and filled it with some Dollar Tree buys for cute fall decoration.
It was totally by accident but the placement of the mirror is perfect! If you’re relaxing on the far end of the plaid couch, you can watch the television in the mirror and not miss anything!
Creating an entry and determining the layout went hand in hand. Because my husband and I both have larger families, I wanted there to be as much seating as possible. I knew that I wanted two couches so that when we have visitors, no one would be forced to sit on the ground or stand. It just so happened that my Aunt and Uncle were refurnishing their den when we bought our house. The plaid couch and chair were graciously given to us with many years of life left in them. They are from the This End Up: Classic Collection.
We bought our big comfy couch the weekend before we closed on the house.
*Side note: It is a good idea to take some measurements before you go furniture shopping. We got pretty lucky with ours.
**Also, DO NOT OPEN A CREDIT CARD RIGHT BEFORE YOU CLOSE ON A HOUSE! It’s a huge no-no that our mortgage broker conveniently forgot to mention.
It turned out that it was the perfect size to create that entry hall I wanted. Not to mention that it’s the most comfortable couch in the world. You have to be careful when you sit down because if you get too comfortable, I promise you will fall asleep.
The chair in the corner serves as double seating as well. When we are at extra full capacity, we are able to move the ottoman aside and use it as additional seating.
The color scheme
This is the view as soon as you walk in the house. The very first thing everyone notices is the color. It’s a very unconventional color but I fell in love with it! I looked through dozens of paint swatches before I finally decided on a color. You should have seen the hesitation on my husband’s face! I knew it was the right color for the room but it took a little coaxing to get him on board.
Obviously we were very happy that my Aunt and Uncle were willing to give us their furniture but we were over the moon when it worked so well with our color scheme. Not only that, it fit perfectly in the space!
The rug, throw pillows, and small details of the décor is what really brought the colors of this room together. I think it’s safe to say that the green of the walls is a bold color. The reds, tans, and even a few yellows here and there really makes it easier on the eyes.
I absolutely love the collage. To me, family photos make a house feel so much more like a home. You’re constantly reminded of the memories you’ve made with your loved ones and what better place to celebrate than your home? Even the small mementos have meaning. My Mom bought the bird and door knob for my birthday one year and I’ll always remember that.
As a general statement, our décor is nothing showy or over-the-top. As a young homeowner, I’m finding that less is more and I love it. A simple lamp sits on our only end table in the room. It was actually my night stand growing up and it holds a lot of sentimental value but I don’t think I’ve ever actually told anyone that before. Well, now everyone knows.
We actually only recently added the fireplace insert. Little Ro is only mobile in the last few months and we needed a cost effective fireplace insert that would keep her safe. My husband spent a total of two hours working on this and I have to say, it turned out beautifully. It keeps the kids safe, the utility bills have gone down, and we spent less than $50 on it. I couldn’t love it more.
Our mantle is always decorated modestly because of our pets and kids. I love the fall swag that I picked up at our local discount store last year. I personally love the muted fall colors as well as the fact that it hides our cable box nicely.
So there ya have it folks. You’ve seen all the details of my favorite room in the house. I hope that it serves as the inspiration you were looking for and that it brings you some kind of comfort. As I had mentioned before, I still want to add a few final touches in this room but there is plenty of time for that. For now, it’s perfect.
